ST. CROIX, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS— At approximately 4:52 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services (VIFEMS) responded to a structure fire in the Profit area, following multiple 911 calls from residents reporting visible flames.
M Company was the first on the scene, encountering a fully engulfed structure and immediately requested additional assistance from C Company and F Company. Firefighters worked to suppress the flames, bringing the fire under control within an hour and a half. The fire completely destroyed the building, but no surrounding structures were affected.
After confirming the building was abandoned, crews discovered an individual trapped in a nearby fence who appeared to be squatting. The person sustained minor injuries while attempting to escape and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Road closures were implemented during the response, with assistance from the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD), but have since been lifted. The area has been cleared, though the building remains unsafe for the public.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services remain steadfast in our dedication to fire prevention, emergency response, and ensuring community safety. Additionally, we remind the public to remain vigilant about fire safety measures and to have well-thought-out evacuation plans in place for their homes.
