ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — On Wednesday, May 15, 2025, at approximately 7:10 p.m., Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services (VIFEMS) received a report via 911 of smoke coming from the Bovoni Landfill. Units from Lima Company were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, responders observed smoke coming from a large pile of green waste debris. Recognizing the potential hazard, responders requested additional support from Hotel Company, Echo Company, and Tango Company. To ensure responder safety, two Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and one ambulance were also deployed to provide on-site medical support throughout the incident.
A9 Trucking, the landfill’s management company, also assisted with the response by deploying two excavators to break apart the debris pile, enabling firefighters to reach internal hot spots more effectively. Additionally, St. Thomas Rescue provided drone-based thermal imaging to enhance visibility and guide firefighting efforts.
A total of 13 firefighters, along with five fire trucks, two EMTs, and one ambulance, participated in the multi-agency response. Fire crews successfully isolated the affected green waste from nearby combustible materials, including adjacent scrap metal piles. The entire area was thoroughly doused with water and cooled to prevent rekindling.
At this time, VIFEMS personnel remain actively engaged at the scene, continuing to move debris. This activity has caused intermittent smoke and the release of airborne particulates. To help reduce odor and limit the spread, dirt is being placed over smoldering areas.
We urge the public to exercise caution when traversing through the Bovoni Landfill area. VIFEMS thanks the community for its patience and understanding as emergency operations continue.
We also extend our gratitude to all supporting partners, including A9 Trucking and St. Thomas Rescue, for their critical support and collaboration in safely managing this incident.
