ST. THOMAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – On Thursday, June 25, 2026, at approximately 9:38 a.m., the Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services (VIFEMS) responded to reports of a brush fire at the Bovoni Landfill.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a brush fire within the landfill area. Windy conditions caused the fire to spread uphill, increasing the risk of further spread.
Crews worked to cut off the fire’s path and contain the flames. Additional units were dispatched to assist, and firefighters thoroughly saturated the affected area to prevent the fire from rekindling.
The fire was brought under control with no injuries reported and no damage to nearby properties.
Although the fire was contained without major damage, the incident highlights the continued danger created by hot, dry and windy conditions across the U.S. Virgin Islands. VIFEMS reminds the public that a temporary territory-wide burn ban remains in effect until further notice. Residents and visitors are urged to avoid all outdoor burning and immediately report signs of smoke or fire by calling 911.
VIFEMS remains committed to rapid response, effective fire suppression, and the protection of life and property across the Territory.
