ST. CROIX, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – On Wednesday, March 25, at approximately 1:58 p.m., the Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services (VIFEMS) responded to reports of a structure fire on East Street in downtown Christiansted.
Crews from C Company arrived on scene and encountered a small wooden structure fully engulfed in flames. Due to fire conditions, firefighters conducted an exterior attack and brought the blaze under control in 20 minutes.
The structure, located adjacent to a main residence on the property, was being used as a living space at the time of the incident. During operations, the occupant was located outside the structure and was later pronounced deceased.
No other injuries were reported, and no damage was reported to the main residence or nearby properties.
Investigators from the VIFEMS Arson Investigation and Prevention Unit responded to the scene following containment and are investigating the cause of the fire.
“This is a tragic incident,” said VIFEMS Director Antonio O. Stevens. “We extend our condolences to the family and friends during this difficult time and recognize the impact this loss has on the community.”
